Skin is one of our most precious possessions and deserves a lot more respect than we give it. More often than not we forget how many factors affect the quality of the skin. Lack of sleep, applying harsh body lotions or products, exposing ourselves to environmental toxins and more, can all play a role in how good (or bad!) our skin looks over the years.
Facial skin often takes more beatings than the rest of our skin because it is constantly exposed to elements. This is why getting puffy, dark under eye circles is such a common problem. In general, our skin begins to wear and tear as we age. The skin surrounding our eyes is especially sensitive and thin, so it’s not surprising that so many people struggle with dark eye circles.
Dark circles are caused by a combination of fatty tissue loss in the skin surrounding your eyes and your facial muscles losing their strength. This causes fluid under your skin to seep into your under eye and results in a puffy, purplish appearance. As with most things, prevention is key. Eating the right foods and getting 7-8 hours nightly plays a significant role in maintaining healthy, glowing under eyes.
But for those days when you just can’t squeak in enough beautyrest, then a quick coffee mask can help you out!
Brighten Eyes with an Easy to Make Coffee Mask
I am obsessed with DIY eye masks because looking sleepy and sullen-eyed is worse than having a bad hair day, in my opinion. Like spot treatments for acne breakouts, a quick eye mask can reduce some of the symptoms of dark, puffy under eye circles with minimal effort. And while I have a few go-to moves for brightening my eyes (hello rosewater!), I live and breath by my DIY coffee mask remedy.
To make your own under eye coffee mask, here’s what you will need:
- 1 tablespoon coffee grounds (used or fresh, but NOT decaf);
- 1 capsule vitamin E oil or 5 drops if in a liquid jar;
- 1/2 teaspoon organic coconut oil;
- 1 teaspoon raw honey (locally sourced if possible);
- 4-5 drops chamomile essential oil.
In a bowl mix all of your ingredients together. Be sure to give it a really good stir, so the oils blend in with the other ingredients. You may notice they begin to separate if you let it sit for a while. If this happens simply mix it up before applying.
Always start a facial treatment (whether it’s a spot treatment or face mask) by cleaning your face first. This cleans and opens up your pores, making it easier for all the amazing ingredients in your facial treatment to absorb deep down into your skin.
Using clean fingers, gently apply the coffee mask under your eyes or your entire face for an all over glow. Use gentle circular motions to awaken your skin and boost circulation for better results. Just be careful not to get too close to your eyes.
It is best to keep this mask on for at least 20 minutes, but if you’re in a rush 5 minutes right under your eyes where you’re experiencing dark circles will give you a nice pick-me-up.
Once you’re finished with your under eye coffee mask, it’s time to wash it off. Use warm (not hot) water to rinse it off and finish by splashing your face with some cold water. Pat your skin dry with a clean face towel then apply your favourite moisturizer for some extra hydration and a nice dewy glow.
Here’s How This Coffee Mask Works
There are so many reasons why this under eye mask works at reducing dark circles, and it’s all to do with its natural ingredients. The caffeine content in coffee helps to fire power your circulation to get fresh, nutrient dense blood pumping to your face. This will help reduce puffiness caused by fluid retention and reduce darkness caused by lifeless blood vessels below the surface of your eye skin.
Hydration is a key element in reducing dark circle, and both vitamin E and coconut oil are perfect for this. Easily absorbed into your skin, and locked in by honey’s humectant properties, your skin will feel soft and lush in no time. Locally sourced honey also has another surprising property — it contains local allergens that may be affecting your under eyes and helps you build immunity against them. Neat!
Last, but certainly not least, chamomile essential oil is rich with anti-inflammatory properties that soothe irritation and reduce puffiness. Whether you’re looking to brighten your entire face or kick those dark under eye circles to the curb, you are going to love this all natural coffee mask.
